Soft Launch of the Editing/Beta website

Okay guys here is the link to the website :www.pacificcrestpublishing.com

On it you will sign up and then be able to see the book in need of editing. In this case, Admiral’s Revenge! Not everything on the website is working yet and I think my brother broke the book up into 5 parts. So sign up for all the sections of the book (in the website) and in the next day or so my brother will approve you to start in on it. I’m not sure if he’s planning to just give everyone who applied access to everything or approve the book section by section.

What I do know is that not everything is up and running on the website just yet so if there are any troubles let me know as a reply to this post right here. I’m’ not sure if there’s even a report an error function on the site yet. Its all going to be up and running before too terribly long (fingers crossed) but the book is up over there and this time we could ‘both’ use your help.

If you want to wait until the site is better up and running that’s just fine too, just remember that this is still a work in progress if you do sign up (like I hope you will!).

If I missed anything I’m sure my brother will reply to this post and clarify.

Yeah, the site is still very much just a skeleton of what it will become, but if you create an account, login, and request beta status for Admiral’s Revenge, part one, we can get the ball rolling.

    A couple requests:

First, if you experience a legit error, tell me about it in this post’s comments, and include whatever info you have readily available on you computer (operating system, internet browser name and version are the big ones, but your country might help also. Some issues pop up in different global regions for whatever reason)

Second, if you could please only apply for Part One to start with, that would be great. I don’t have an admin panel built yet, so it couod get confusing greenlighting your beta status if you hit me with all five at once. At the VERY least, apply to me sequentially (part one first, part two second, etc..) so I don’t mess up your authorization status.

And third, only maybe 20% of the features and links work at the moment, so don’t worry about what appears to be a broken link or dead button, because that’s probably the actual case. I tried to put up ‘under construction’ tags on those pieces, but ran out of time.

Hope you all can get on there and give it a whirl!

Ok, so anyone who signed up for betaa status prior to this reply’s timestamp had their first beta request approved!

Emil pointed out a helpful tip, until i get the message syatem to automaticalky do so, and that’s to include the file you’re requesting access to in the message itself.

E.g. Hi, this is Vamen and I’d like beta access to Admiral’s Revenge, Part One!

Obviously you all want to access the whole thing, but I’m only about halfway through it myself, lol.

    Happy hunting!

And on the subject of permissions, use this thread to report if you’re denied access when you should be permitted, or to tell me if I gave you access to the wrong files, etc..

I’m not so much worried about policing you all; Josh’s fans have been nothing short of amazing to this point. I just need to know if there are major flaws in the system regarding permissions and such.

    Baby steps, after all.

Did you get a message/signup from me from more than one book? I tryed to sign up for the other parts but it said “You have already sent this message” or something like that.

Hi, I can read the 1st part, but for other parts it asks me to “Apply”. When I actually apply, it says β€œYou have already sent this message”.

Thanks for the feedback, archit. I just noticed some redundancy issues with permitting second and third pieces. I’ll get on them tomorrow morning if I can!

I saw the extra messages, Emil πŸ™‚ Make sure you make some notes on the first section wherever you find issues, that way I can see your progress beta-reading. Right now I can’t really see how many times people have accessed the files, I can only see when someone makes an auto-note.

So far, I actually do receive your subsequent requests for access to parts two, three, etc.. I tested it myself and it looks like it works fine — just need to get rid of the blasted ‘you already sent this’ message!

So, again, when you’re proofing the book leave a few drag-and-drop notations so I can see that you’ve actually read the thing.

If, in the unlikely event you haven’t found any issues, leave a note in this thread saying so and I’ll authorize you for the next packet πŸ˜‰

revenge part 1. very good, on par with previous work. other than a misspelled word in the content i was able to view there does seem to be a formatting issue. checked across multiple browsers (firefox, chrome, safari), operating system platforms (os x, windows 7, ios7) and devices (quad mac pro, dell laptop, iphone) on nearly every page the leading paragraph is missing content. it seems to be getting lost in the page break.

  11. kelly davis - October 8, 2013 12:20 pm

fyi the spelling issues in revenge part 1 were:

    communiquy – page 24 – communique

    T cruiser’s beam is smaller – page 25 – The cruiser’s beam is smaller

there are of course arguable hyphenation instances, both needed and unneeded, and a few compounded words that shouldn’t be and don’t require a hyphen but again arguable πŸ˜‰

    Hey,

be back from holiday and send in my *beta reader* call for one to four. Hope you had fun in the last two weeks. BTW would it make sense for you if <I wouild go over the other books and install the points there I send you per mail?

On the point of general points / discussions – are you planing a general guideline / blog on that inside the side? Looks great so far, but as I am only back today and will be to work from tomorrow to go over the other books will take time.

BTW are the ones uploaded here a rewrite in the way that you were installing all the information from reader proof reading therein or is it the same as on AMAZON?

The parts aren’t loading up properly in Chrome,, the end of the page or the start of the new page are being chopped off. Log in is also spotty.. The password that won’t work the first 3 times works on the 4th try. Yet, that same password won’t work on another computer..

Ok, so as far as I can tell even if you don’t see your previous, yellow highlights, they do get logged. I have a handful of people with 5+ remarks, so it does work — but I need to revisit that issue to make sure that you can still see all of your highlights. For your information, the system logs the changes as soon as you change pages, so I *suppose* it’s possible that making two comments on one page could present issues at present…need to get back to you on that. My advice is if you encounter such a problem, make the first highlight, go to the previous page momentarily, come back and make the second comment. We’ll see if that logs them properly.

That’s disconcerting about the cutoffs losing lines, Johntae…I thought I had that fixed. The login issue has me scratching my head. Where are you from, Johntae (city, state, country if you’re comfortable sharing here. if not, send me another request via the site with the info please)? My server admin settings might need a tweak, and generally those have to do with geography.

I just approved all new applicants since my last batch, as well as anyone who applied for part two.

Alright, a confession: I made a boneheaded error when creating the on-site messaging system, which I’ll correct next week with any luck. So this issue is ENTIRELY on me. *headdesk*

PLEASE REFER TO WHICH PART OF THE BOOK YOU ARE APPLYING FOR IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE TEXT. I completely spaced out and didn’t make an auto-tagging feature so I can easily sort through the part one applications, part two applications, etc.. As it is, I honestly can’t see any of it, hahaha. Beginner’s mistake…sorry πŸ™

I got a problem when switching betwen pages.
For example, at the end of page 3 it says: “What are you talking about?” I asked, closing my previously gaping mouth.
And when I then hit ‘Next’ and is on page 4 it says: ‘that Admiral Montagne was really the burgeoning and would-be ineffectual, Tyrant of…..’
Also, even if I rezize the window the text is the same size/page size, I got a bigger monitor and I like to put the book from top of screen to bottom.

    I’m using Google Chrome.

I know I had to significantly shorten the session time for logins because I was getting spammed like a Filipino at Christmas for a few weeks there, and the only thing that helped was tightening up login times. I’ll DEFINITELY install a password recovery system though — great point.

I didn’t realize there was a discussion going on here (sorry). I have been highlighting and making comments in the beta area. I am in the US. I have tried using IE and Google Chrome; in both browsers (like other beta readers have mentioned) there are missing sentences in the leading paragraph when coming from the previous page. I have also tried minimizing and maximizing the browser without successful resolution of the issue.

I’ll sift through the older messages and find yours, dcl. Sorry about the delay.

Let me just say, by way of appreciation, that I broke the Revenge file up for precisely this reason: I needed to identify the specific hangups in the system regarding permission tokens. If I can’t get the thing ready to go today (in less than eight hours’ time from now) then I’ll post the entire thing as a separate file so you all can read the parts that I haven’t yet given my revisions/first pass of edits, just so you don’t get disgusted with the entire thing.

You all have been far more helpful than you likely believe, and I really do appreciate the assistance. I’ve got a good list of issues I need to correct, and your patience has been HUGE for me. Let me know in these comments how much patience is left, because I’m not here to aggravate my brother’s biggest fans.

It would be nice to have instructions describing how we should do the editing. Like, should we just identify the places where there is bad writing, wrong words, etc, or should we suggest a correction?

And if we should suggest a correction, how do we do it? Should we just change the text in that place where we can write, or what?

I suspect I did things the wrong way and a lot of the stuff I tagged got lost, tbh.

  40. Vamen - October 9, 2013 9:07 pm

Honestly, all you have to do is highlight the area and it’ll make a note for me when I go through the file.

But, that said, I saw someone actually managed to make comments! I was stunned…I didn’t think the dialogue box would even accept inputs, but apparently it does – at least, for someone.

So yeah, just highlight the area and I’ll be alerted to it. I honestly don’t know how that person made the entries, whoever it was (I’ll check, so I can have them tell us all, haha).

OK, sounds good and simple enough. Easier than what I was trying to do.

As a side note, unless something changed, the tagging function did not work for me for the last 15 pages or so of the first part of the book.

Also, please authorize my access to parts 2 and 3. πŸ™‚

    Hey,

front up, thanks for a real nice side. I think when it got out BETA phase it will really be a great think and I hope you will find lots of *free writers* using it to better there writting (and to get you something out of it). You should really think about getting you a patent hereon.

Now will give my 5 cent as a first read. Many is been said before but I will try to clarify something and why it is been troublesome to me.

The two most important points for me are

a.) the missing part on top of the side. The reason is that as english is not my first language I am more in looking for logical flaws instaed of mistakes in the written form. That missing line there get me out of reading everytime as the flow is gone.

b.) the problem with getting access to part two and three. Reason is that as said I am looking for logical flaws I don’t know if the next page there is been a reason presented for something going on in the first part. I installed the question for release at first wrogly and be not sure if the second one got through as I got the message about *You have applied* or hoiw that was written. Don’t wanted to hassle you with a third one.

Now some points further down the line from my POV. Some of it has been brought up so this is only a completition where it comes to my side.

a.) Would it be possible to make a *Safe E-Mail-Adress* function, now I would not go for a *Safe Password* but at least it should be possible to not every time need to write in the e-mail-adress. (BTW — this should really be at the end of the workline. That is more like a hassle instead of a problem with the side.*

b.) Would it be possible to make the reading window bigger and longer? As said I am looking for logical flaws and every time I have to stop reading gets me out of the feel of the story plot. It would be great if I could read it in a bigger form than 100 % but than I would have to draw for every line so that is not possible.

c.) In the long draw it would be nice to have some discussion forum for the beta readers where people can drop in their opinion / feel on the different parts. I – personally – have problems with one of the chapters (will let you know that in the beta report later on the weekend and been asking myself. Is that me or fell other similar and I think that would be good for you to know but that is not for here to be discussed.

d.) I am not sure but believe I still don’t have the handle on the program – but than have not really had the the time to look into the function of it. Anyway I it would be nice to have some information from your side when you had updated the *beta read* with mistakes or re-written parts where the re-written parts got highlighted some way so people could go over them again.

e.) This is in correlation to d.) but also stands for itself. Would it be possible to get a page drop where I can give in a page I want to jump to. That would eb especially helpfull if the mentioned re-written parts get than something alongside *Look chapter 5 m- page 19 to 21) but also when you go normal over the story.
As I make a first quick read and than go over the text carefully and have not so much time at once I can’t do everything in a row, especially when i want to give some input on the different matters so I have laterone everytime to hit myself through all the prior oages instead of giving in *page xx*. From my side something that way would be really helpful.

f.) Something more along the line of *readability*. Could you make a bigger interruption when you go for a new chapter. Lateron I had the problem that I where asking myself why is he speaking to this person now and had to redo it twice to than finding out. Ah, be new chapter. Nothing really important but nice to have from my POV.

On the *comment and notice* I can’t give any imput yet as – as said – I have not reach that point yet. So far so good, as said i think that has real great potential if done right. Hope for the best for you – and us.

Ok, guys. Looks like I can’t get that issue fixed today – AND that I can’t even post the new file to the site, since the very problem which is stopping many/all of you from accessing part two would do the same to the book in its entirety.

I’m going to need to ask for your patience again; I’ll get this thing fixed, but it was a bigger issue than I suspected it was.

I *can* say that I’m just about to the 120k mark myself (~3/4 of the book) and any of you who wanted more action…well, umm…yeah. I believe Samuel L. Jackson said it best in Jurassic Park: “Hold onto your butts!”
